J. Maarten Troost - The Sex Lives of Cannibals. Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific

"The Sex Lives of Cannibals": A Hilarious Journey to the Ends of the Earth

"The Sex Lives of Cannibals" is a laugh-out-loud true story that takes you on a wild and unforgettable journey to the remote South Pacific island nation of Kiribati, a place that author J. Maarten Troost playfully calls "possibly the Worst Place on Earth." At twenty-six, Troost, a restless soul weary of unfulfilling jobs and academic pursuits, decided to escape the humdrum of his life and embark on a romantic adventure to the far reaches of the globe. He envisioned a tropical paradise, a chance to reconnect with nature and find himself. However, his idyllic dream quickly shattered upon arriving in Tarawa, the capital of Kiribati. The reality was far from the postcard image he had in his mind. Tarawa, with its stifling heat, polluted seas, and relentless "La Macarena" playing on repeat, turned out to be a far cry from paradise. Troost found himself battling a host of challenges, from deadly bacteria and toxic fish to the ever-present threat of power outages and a chronic shortage of beer. His journey is punctuated by hilarious misadventures and encounters with eccentric local characters like "Half-Dead Fred" and the self-proclaimed Poet Laureate of Tarawa, a British drunkard with no actual poetic experience. "The Sex Lives of Cannibals" is a rollicking travelogue that will leave you chuckling at Troost's witty observations and marveling at his resilience. It's a story that celebrates the unexpected joys of travel, even in the most challenging of circumstances. It's a reminder that sometimes the most adventurous journeys are the ones that take us far beyond our comfort zones, into the heart of the unknown.
J. Maarten Troost is a writer and humorist known for his travel narratives, infused with sharp wit and a knack for capturing the absurdity of everyday life.
