Joseph Vogel - Earth Song. Inside Michael Jackson's Opus Magnum

Earth Song: A Symphony of Conscience

Released in 1995, Michael Jackson's "Earth Song" was a sonic revolution, defying the prevailing trends of the era. This six-and-a-half minute ballad, a fusion of blues, opera, rock, and gospel, stood in stark contrast to the cynicism and apathy of Generation X. It dared to challenge the norms of pop music, refusing to shy away from the pressing issues of corporate greed, genocide, and environmental indifference.

The song's impact was undeniable. It topped the charts in over fifteen countries, yet it was inexplicably withheld from release as a single in the United States. This paradox only served to heighten the mystique surrounding "Earth Song," solidifying its position as one of Jackson's greatest artistic achievements.

In his groundbreaking monograph, Joseph Vogel delves into the heart of this timeless masterpiece. Drawing on original research and interviews with key figures involved in the song's creation, Vogel paints a vivid picture of "Earth Song's" evolution. He takes us back to Vienna in 1988, where the seeds of the song were first sown, and guides us through the recording studio, revealing never-before-heard stories from its creation.

Vogel masterfully explores the song's controversial release and reception, shedding light on the complex dynamics at play. He culminates his journey in Munich, 1999, where Jackson delivered a final, unforgettable performance of "Earth Song," solidifying its legacy as a testament to his artistic brilliance and unwavering commitment to social conscience.

Joseph Vogel, praised by filmmaker Spike Lee for "brilliantly cracking the DNA" of Jackson's work, delivers an insightful and comprehensive exploration of "Earth Song," offering a profound reassessment of this poignant and enduring musical masterpiece.
