Liam Callanan - The Cloud Atlas

The Cloud Atlas: Where History Meets the Supernatural

The vast, unforgiving wilderness of Alaska, a backdrop of chilling beauty, provides the stage for Liam Callanan's captivating debut novel, The Cloud Atlas. The year is 1945, and the war is winding down, but the threat of unseen danger still hangs heavy in the air. Young Sergeant Louis Belk, a bomb disposal expert, finds himself thrust into the heart of a top-secret mission - to find and defuse Japanese balloon bombs that drift silently across the Pacific, threatening the American mainland. As he navigates this treacherous landscape, Belk encounters two contrasting forces: his superior officer, a hardened OSS veteran, who introduces him to a world of shadows and secrets, and Lily, a Yup'ik Eskimo woman, who reveals a mystical world of spirits and ancient wisdom. The haunting beauty of Alaska, the chilling reality of the balloon bombs, and the intricate relationships woven between Louis, his superior, and Lily form a compelling narrative, blurring the lines between history and myth. As Louis ventures deeper into the untamed wilderness, he uncovers truths that will forever alter his life.
