Natsuhiko Kyogoku - The Summer of the Ubume

Let the Shadows Whisper: A Tale of Ubume and Unrest

The Kuonji household is cloaked in an unsettling stillness. Kyoko, the mistress of the house, carries a secret, a heavy burden of a pregnancy that stretches beyond the realm of reason. Twenty months have passed since the child's conception, and the father, Makio, vanished into the shadows months before. With whispers of an unseen presence lurking within the walls, the Kuonji family finds itself adrift, seeking solace in the ethereal embrace of a world they cannot comprehend. Into this unsettling scene steps Akihiko "Kyogokudo" Chuzenji, a freelance writer whose thirst for the truth leads him to the doorstep of the paranormal. He seeks the wisdom of his friend, an exorcist, but a peculiar twist awaits. This exorcist, unlike others, does not believe in ghosts. To him, the supernatural is not a realm of ethereal spirits, but a tapestry woven with threads of human psychology and metaphysical forces. As Chuzenji delves deeper into the mystery, he becomes entangled in the web of the Ubume, a chilling apparition from Japanese folklore said to be the vengeful spirit of a woman who died in childbirth. The summer heat intensifies, the shadows dance, and the line between reality and illusion blurs as Chuzenji confronts the secrets of the Kuonji household and the haunting presence of the Ubume. The Summer of the Ubume is more than just a chilling ghost story. It's a captivating journey into the depths of human anxieties and the shadowy corners of the Japanese soul. Natsuhiko Kyogoku, the author, weaves together intricate plots and rich folklore, delivering a compelling story that transcends genres, captivating readers with its unique blend of mystery, suspense, and the eerie allure of the supernatural.
