Sharon Shinn - Fortune and Fate

Fortune and Fate: Where Destiny and Courage Intertwine

In the aftermath of a devastating civil war that ripped Gillengaria asunder, former Rider Wen finds herself adrift, haunted by the weight of a single, fateful mistake. Seeking solace and redemption, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, driven by a desire to make amends for her past failings. Fate intervenes when Wen stumbles upon a kidnapped serramarra, a young woman named Karryn Fortunalt, the daughter of a powerful marlord who fueled the flames of war.

With Karryn's life hanging in the balance, Wen finds herself drawn into a complex web of politics and intrigue. Jasper Paladar, Karryn's guardian, a man of intellect and kindness, convinces Wen to take up residence at the manor known as Fortune, tasked with assembling a formidable guard to shield Karryn from further threats. As Wen grapples with the weight of her past and the responsibility of protecting Karryn, she finds herself drawn to Jasper, a man unlike any she has ever encountered. His gentle nature and scholarly pursuits provide a stark contrast to the hardened world she has known.

Despite her growing affection for Jasper and Karryn, Wen remains determined to fulfill her contract and move on. But as danger continues to lurk around every corner, she realizes that leaving Karryn's side is impossible. The threat to Karryn's life is a constant reminder of the fragile peace that hangs by a thread. Wen's journey to find redemption becomes intertwined with Karryn's fight for survival, forcing her to confront her past, embrace the present, and face the uncertain future that lies ahead.
